Description:
Patients:
This phase 2 trial involved 66 patients with recurrent glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Of these, 29 were female, and 37 were male. Age range of patients was 26-78 years old, with a median age of 58.

Treatment:
Patients were treated with the chemotherapeutic drug,vorinostat, which blocks the growth of cancer cells by inhibiting enzymes called histone deacetylases.

Toxicity:
The maximum toxicity grade observed in any of the patients in this study was 4. Grade 3 to 4 hematologic toxicity, including thrombocytopenia, neutropenia, and anemia, was observed in 26% of patients. Nonhematologic toxicities of grade 3 to 4, including fatigue, dehydration, and hypernatremia, were observed in 26% of patients.

Results:
Median overall survival in this study was 5.7 months, with a range of 0.7 to 28+ months. The percentage of patients who were progression free at 6 months was 15.2% (10 out of 66 patients).
