Description:
Patients:
This phase 2 study involved 41 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who had not received prior chemotherapy for this disease. The median patient age was 63.2 years and 80.5% were male.

Treatment:
Patients were treated with a combination of two chemotherapy agents, pegylated liposomal doxorubicin and gemcitabine.

Toxicity:
The maximum level of toxicity reported was of grade 4. Grade 3-4 toxicities included neutropenia (17% of patients), anemia (7%), and nausea/vomiting (2%).

Results:
The reported median overall survival was 22.5 months.
