Description:
Patients:
This study involved women with advanced breast cancer who had not received prior anthracycline-based therapy. Patients were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A consisted of 54 patients with a median age of 63 years. Group B had 50 patients with a median age of 61 years.

Treatment:
Patients in group A were given the chemotherapy agents epirubicin and vinorelbine. Group B was given the chemotherapy agents pegylated liposomal doxorubicin and vinorelbine.

Toxicities:
The maximum toxicity grade was 4 for both groups. Toxicities reported for groups A and B included grade 3-4 neutropenia (18.5% of patients in group A, 22% in group B), grade 3 alopecia (100% group A, 50% group B), and grade 3 mucositis (inflammation of the mouth and GI tract; 7.4% group A, 12% group B).

Results:
For group A, the median progression-free survival was 10.7 months and median overall survival was 34.6 months. The median progression-free survival for group B was 8.8 months and the median overall survival was 24.8 months.
