Description:
Patients:
This phase 2 study involved 45 malignant mesothelioma patients who had received prior platinum-based therapy. The median age was 69 years (range of 51-80) and 73% were male.

Treatment:
Patients were treated with the biologic therapy valproic acid, a histone deacetylase inhibitor, and the chemotherapy agent doxorubicin.

Toxicities:
Treatment-related deaths due to febrile neutropenia and cerebral thromboembolism (stroke) were reported. Grade 4 leucopenia and neutropenia and grade 3 alopecia were also reported.

Results:
The median progression-free survival was 2.5 months and the median overall survival was 6.7 months.
