Description:
Patients:
This phase 2 study involved 173 patients with malignant pleural mesothelioma who had not received prior chemotherapy. The mean patient age was 62.8 years and 90.8% were male.

Treatment:
Patients were treated with the chemotherapy agents gemcitabine, carboplatin, and liposomal-encapsulated doxorubicin.

Toxicities:
Three treatment-related deaths due to neutropenic sepsis (infection) were reported. Grade 4 thrombocytopenia and alopecia were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival was 13 months.
