Brain Cancer treatment details. Radiation. Surgery. Various, Cambridge, United Kingdom

Survival: 9.5 months
Toxicity Grade:
Treatments: Radiation
Country: United Kingdom
City/State/Province: Cambridge
Hospital: Various
Journal: Link
Date: 1/2001

Patients: This study involved a total of 674 patients with “high-grade astrocytoma” and included: 449 patients with glioblastoma multiforme, 113 patients with anaplastic astrocytoma, and 112 patients considered other (other – eligible, other – ineligible, and other – not assessable).

Treatment: After surgery, all patients were divided into two groups: a group of 339 patients received radiotherapy alone (226 glioblastoma multiforme, 60 anaplastic astrocytoma, and 53 other); and 335 patients (223 glioblastoma multiforme, 53 anaplastic astrocytoma, and 59 other) received radiotherapy plus chemotherapy comprised of procarbazine, lomustine and vincristine (PCV).

Toxicity: Toxicity not discussed.

Results: For all patients receiving surgery and radiotherapy only (no chemotherapy), the median overall survival was 9.5 months. It is Cancer Monthly’s understanding that the median overall survival for glioblastoma multiforme patients in this group was 9 months and the overall survival for anaplastic astrocytoma patients in this group was 13 months, but this data would require validation.
