Description:
Patients:
This phase II study involved 80 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma, 86.3% of whom were male. The median patient age was 68 years.

Treatment:
Patients were treated with the biologic therapy agent called pegylated arginine deiminase, or ADI-PEG, which is an enzyme that targets an amino acid needed for tumor cell growth.

Toxicities:
Treatment-related deaths due to liver failure, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, hepatorenal syndrome, and heart attack were reported. Grade 3 bronchopneumonia was also reported.

Results:
The reported median overall survival was 11.4 months.
