Patients: This Phase II study involved 88 patients with recurrent and progressive malignant gliomas (40 with glioblastoma multiforme (one had a gliosarcoma), 28 with anaplastic astrocytoma, 13 with anaplastic oligodendroglioma, one with iligodendroglioma, and six with mixed anaplastic glioma).

Treatment: Treatment consisted of: the chemotherapy drug temozolomide and the biological agent 13-cis-retinoic acid (a retinoid).

Toxicity: Grade 4 toxicities included: granulocytopenia, hypercholesterolemia, leucopenia, and thrombocytopenia.

Results: The median overall survival for the glioblastoma multiforme patients was 35 weeks (8.1 months).
