This phase II study involved 269 women with locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer who had received prior chemotherapy with anthracycline, taxane, and capecitabine. The median patient age was 56 years.

Patients were treated with the chemotherapy agent eribulin.

There was one reported death, due to an unknown cause, that was considered to be possibly related to treatment. The most common treatment-related toxicities were fatigue (64.9% of patients with grade 1-3), alopecia (60.1% with grade 1-2), neutropenia (59.8% with grade 1-4), and nausea (44.3% with grade 1-3).

The median progression-free and overall survival rates were 2.6 and 10.4 months, respectively.

This study was supported by the pharmaceutical company Eisai, Inc.
