This phase III study involved women with metastatic breast cancer who had previously received chemotherapy. These patients were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A had 74 patients with a median age of 60 years. Group B also consisted of 74 patients with a median age of 60 years.

Group A was treated with a combination of the chemotherapy agents vinorelbine and gemcitabine. Group B was treated with the chemotherapy agent capecitabine.

The most severe toxicities in group A were grade 4 neutropenia (5 patients). Grade 3 fatigue (3 patients) was also reported.

The most severe toxicities in group B were one case each of grade 4 neutropenia and allergy. Grade 3 hand-foot skin reaction (4 patients) was also reported.

The median overall survival for groups A and B was 20.4 and 22.4 months, respectively.
