Description:
Patients:
This phase III study involved metastatic colorectal cancer patients who were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A consisted of 238 patients with a median age of 63 years and 66% male. Group B had 241 patients with a median age of 63 years and 73% male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A were treated with the chemotherapy agents irinotecan, folinic acid, and 5-fluorouracil.

Patients in group B were administered chemotherapy with irinotecan and oxaliplatin.

Toxicities:
There were 3 treatment-related deaths in group A due to unspecified causes. Grade 3-4 diarrhea, nausea, and leukopenia were also reported.
There were 4 treatment-related deaths due to unspecified causes in group B. Grade 3-4 diarrhea, nausea, and leukopenia were also reported.

Results:
For group A, the median progression-free and overall survival rates were 8.2 and 22 months, respectively.
In group B, the median progression-free and overall survival rates were 7.2 and 19 months, respectively.
