Description:
Patients:
This phase 3 study involved patients with advanced or metastatic urothelial cancer who had not received prior chemotherapy and were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A consisted of 312 patients with a median age of 61 years; 82.3% were male. Group B had 314 patients with a median age of 61 years; 81% were male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A were treated with the chemotherapy agents paclitaxel, cisplatin, and gemcitabine.

Patients in group B were treated with cisplatin and gemcitabine.

Toxicities:
There were six treatment-related deaths due to unspecified causes in group A. Grade 4 neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and heart problems were also reported.

There were three treatment-related deaths due to unspecified causes in group B. Grade 4 neutropenia, heart problems, and infections were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival rates for groups A and B were 15.8 and 12.7 months, respectively.
