Description:
Patients:
This phase III study involved non–small-cell lung cancer patients who were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A had 275 patients with a median age of 63 years and 62% were male. Group B had 271 patients with a median age of 63 years and 60 % were male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A were treated with the chemotherapy agents paclitaxel and carboplatin and received radiation therapy.

Patients in group B received radiation therapy, chemotherapy with paclitaxel and carboplatin, and were treated with the biologic therapy agent thalidomide, which inhibits the formation of blood vessels in the tumor, therefore blocking tumor growth.

Toxicities:
Treatment-related deaths due to infection and thromboembolism were reported for group A. Grade 4 leukopenia and neutropenia were also reported.

Treatment-related deaths due to pneumonia, cardiac ischemia (lack of blood and oxygen supply to the heart), and thromboembolism were reported for group B. Grade 4 leukopenia and neutropenia were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival for groups A and B was 15.3 and 16.0 months, respectively.
