Description:
Patients:
This study involved previously untreated metastatic colorectal carcinoma patients who were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A consisted of 502 patients with a median age of 58 years and 59.6% male. Group B had 358 patients with a median age of 59 years and 59.2% were male.

Treatment:
Patients in group A were treated with the biologic therapy agent cediranib (an inhibitor of the VEGF protein that interferes with tumor blood supply) and one of two combinations of chemotherapy agents: fluorouracil, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin or capecitabine and oxaliplatin.

Patients in group B were treated with one of two combinations of chemotherapy agents: fluorouracil, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin or capecitabine and oxaliplatin.

Toxicities:
Treatment-related deaths due to pneumonia and septic shock were reported in group A. Grade 3 or higher diarrhea, neutropenia, vomiting, and fatigue were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival rates for groups A and B were 19.7 and 18.9 months, respectively.
