Description:
Patients:
This phase 2 study involved metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer who had not received prior chemotherapy. Patients were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A had 65 patients with a median age of 68 years. Group B had 66 patients with a median age of 68 years.

Treatment:
Patients in group A were treated with the chemotherapy agent docetaxel, the hormone prednisone, and a placebo (mock drug).

Patients in group B were treated with docetaxel, prednisone, and the biologic therapy agent intetumumab, a monoclonal antibody for alpha integrins that interferes with tumor growth.

Toxicities:
The maximum toxicity level reported for group A was grade 4. Grade 3-4 leukopenia, neutropenia, weakness and diarrhea were reported.

The maximum toxicity level reported for group B was grade 4. Grade 3-4 leukopenia, neutropenia, weakness and fatigue were reported.

Results:
The median overall survival rates for groups A and B were 17.2 and 20.6 months, respectively.
