Description:
Patients:
This phase 2 study involved 63 female taxane-resistant metastatic breast cancer patients who had been previously treated with anthracyclines. The median patient age was 52 years.

Treatment:
Patients were treated with the chemotherapy agent capecitabine and the biologic therapy agent tipifarnib, which is an inhibitor of a protein called farnesyltransferase.

Toxicities:
The most severe toxicities were of grade 4 and included neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, and shortness of breath. Grade 3 nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and anorexia were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival was 11.4 months.
