Description:
Patients:
This phase 2 study involved 34 melanoma patients who had not received prior chemotherapy. The median patient age was 63 years and 67.6 were male.

Treatment:
Patients were treated with the biologic therapy agent called YM155, which is an inhibitor of the survivin protein and causes cancer cell death.

Toxicities:
There was one adverse event-related death due to nervous system metastasis, but this was considered not to be related to treatment. The most severe treatment-related toxicities were grade 3 liver toxicities. Grade 2 fatigue, diarrhea, and nausea were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival was 9.9 months.
