This phase 2 study involved 34 melanoma patients who had not received prior chemotherapy. The median patient age was 63 years and 67.6 were male.

Patients were treated with the biologic therapy agent called YM155, which is an inhibitor of the survivin protein and causes cancer cell death.

There was one adverse event-related death due to nervous system metastasis, but this was considered not to be related to treatment. The most severe treatment-related toxicities were grade 3 liver toxicities. Grade 2 fatigue, diarrhea, and nausea were also reported.

The median overall survival was 9.9 months.

This study was supported by Astellas Pharma Global Development.
