This study involved previously untreated advanced hepatocellular cancer patients who were divided into two separate treatment groups. Group A consisted of 74 patients with an average age of 71 years; 86.5% were male. Group B had 66 patients with an average age of 66 years; 79.4% were male.

Patients in group A were treated with the biologic sorafenib.

Patients in group B received radiation therapy with transarterial radioembolization (TARE).

Treatment-related deaths were reported for group A with causes including stroke and liver failure. Grade 3-4 fatigue and hypertension were also reported.

Treatment-related deaths were reported for group B with causes including liver failure, pneumonia, and intestinal bleeding. Grade 3-4 fever was also reported.

The median overall survival rates for groups A and B were 14.4 and 13.2 months, respectively.
