Description:
Patients:
This phase 2 study involved 66 hepatocellular carcinoma patients who had not been previously treated. Twenty-nine of the patients were 60 years old or older and 58 were male.

Treatment:
Patients were treated with standard of care (either surgery, chemotherapy with docetaxel and lipiodol, or best supportive care) and the immunotherapy called CIK, or cytokine-induced killer cells, which are immune cells targeted to kill tumor cells.

Toxicities:
The most severe toxicities were of grade 2 and included grade 1-2 headache, leukopenia, and fever.

Results:
The median overall survival was 24.9 months.
