Description:
Patients:
This phase 2 study involved 70 hepatocellular carcinoma patients with an average age of 55.4 years; 85.7% were male.

Treatment:
Patients received biologic therapy with refametinib (inhibitor of the MEK kinase proteins that interferes with cancer cell growth) and sorafenib.

Toxicities:
There were four reported treatment-related deaths due to infection, liver failure, encephalopathy (brain disease), and tumor lysis syndrome. Cardiac events and nausea/vomiting were also reported.

Results:
The median overall survival was 9.5 months.
