Patients: This study involved 324 patients with inoperable hepatocellular (liver) carcinoma. Patients were divided into three groups: two groups of patients (74 and 120 patients) who were administered the treatment at two different doses and 130 patients were given placebo.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of tamoxifen (nolvadex).

Toxicity: Severe and moderate toxicities in the two treatment groups included chest discomfort, nausea, vomiting, lethargy, poor appetite, and palpitation.

Results: The median survival time was 2.1 months (2.2 months for the higher dose group). The median survival time for the group who received placebo was 2.7 months.
