Patients: This Phase III study involved 916 advanced breast cancer patients (postmenopausal) with hormone-receptor positive or unknown tumors. Patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 had 458 patients, and Group 2 had 458 patients.

Treatment: Patients in group 2 were administered tamoxifen (nolvadex).

Toxicity: Toxicities associated with the treatment for patients in group 2 (“irrespective of relationship” to the treatment) included: bone fractures of any cause (5.3%), bone pain, hot flushes, back pain, dyspnea, nausea, arthralgia, cough, fatigue, and constipation.

Results: Median overall survival for patients in group 1 was 30 months.
