Description:
Patients: This Phase III trial involved 731 patients with metastatic breast cancer. Patients were divided into three groups: Group A contained 245 patients, Group B contained 242 patients, and Group C contained 244 patients.

Treatment: Patients in Group A were administered the drug doxorubicin (adriamycin). Patients in Group B were administered the drug paclitaxel (taxol). Patients in Group C were administered the drugs – doxorubicin (adriamycin) and paclitaxel (taxol).

Toxicity: 2.5% of patients in Group A (i.e. 6 patients) experienced “lethal toxicity.” Grade 3-4 toxicities included hematologic, infection, cardiac complications, neurologic complications, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomatitis.

Results: Median overall survival for patients in Group A was 19.1 months.
