Patients: This Phase I/II trial involved 56 patients with a median age of 56 years. Forty-five patients had non-small-cell lung cancer (majority with adenocarcinoma) and eleven patients had small cell lung cancer. None of the patients had prior chemotherapy.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of the administration of three drugs irinotecan (camptosar), cisplatin (platinol), and etoposide (VP-16, vepesid).

Toxicity: There was grade 4 hematologic toxicity. Other toxicities (grade 1-3) included elevated enzymes, elevated creatinine, hyponatremia, hypokalemia, infection, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, stomatitis, and alopecia.

Results: The median survival time for the 45 patients with non-small-cell lung cancer was 10.1 months.
