Patients: This Phase III trial involved 698 patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. All patients were age 70 or older. Patients were divided into three groups. Group 1 comprised 233 patients. Group 2 comprised 233 patients. Group 3 comprised 232 patients.

Treatment: Patients in Group 1 were administered the drug vinorelbine (navelbine). Patients in Group 2 were administered the drug gemcitabine. Patients in Group 3 were administered both drugs, vinorelbine and gemcitabine.

Toxicity: Grade 4 toxicities for patients in Group 1 included hematologic, cardiac, constipation, and central neurotoxicity. Other toxicities (grade 3 and below) included infection, bleeding, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, mucositis, fatigue, skin, extravasation, fever, pulmonary, renal, hepatic, and peripheral neurotoxicity.

Results: Median survival for patients in Group 1 (vinorelbine) was 36 weeks (8.3 months).
