Patients: This multicenter Phase II trial involved 50 patients with hormone refractory prostate cancer. The median age was 67.5. The median PSA was 306.81 (ranged from .2 4200). Metastatic disease sites included bone, soft tissue, and lymph nodes.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of the drug Suramin and hydrocortisone.

Toxicity: Infection was documented in 15 patients, which was treated uneventfully except for 1 toxic death. In addition, grade 3-4 toxicities included hematologic, neurologic, constipation, renal (creatinine), hepatic (transaminitis), fatigue, and skin rash.

Results: The median overall survival was 11 months.
