Patients: This Phase III trial involved a total of 260 patients with hormone refractory (androgen independent) prostate cancer. Patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 with 132 patients and Group 2 with 128 patients. The median age for patients in Group 2 was 72. For both groups, the median PSA was 58 years.

Treatment: Patients in Group 2 underwent anti-androgen withdrawal in combination with the drug, ketoconazole.

Toxicity: For patients in Group 2, grade 3-4 toxicities included hepatic, anorexia, neurotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, pulmonary, coagulation, nausea/vomiting, and malaise/fatigue.

Results: For patients in Group 2 the median survival was 15.3 months.
