Patients: This Phase II trial involved a total of 75 patients with hormone refractory (androgen-independent) prostate cancer. Patients were divided into two groups: Group 1 comprised of 25 patients and Group 2 comprised of 50 patients. The median age for the patients in Group 1 was 67 years and the median baseline PSA was 64.4 (range .2 340.8).

Treatment: For patients in Group 1, the treatment consisted of the chemotherapy drug, docetaxel (taxotere).

Toxicity: For patients in Group 1, grade 3 toxicities included allergic reaction, diarrhea, constipation, pericardial effusion, muscular weakness, sensation disturbance, hyperglycemia, elevated total bilirubin, thrombocytopenia, and anemia.

Results: For patients in Group 1 the median survival was 14.7 months.
