Patients: This Phase II study involved 26 patients with advanced androgen-independent (hormone refractory) prostate cancer. Median age was 70 years. Twenty-one patients had bone metastasis. Nine patients had previous radiation therapy.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of 1 alpha-hydroxyvitamin D2 (a vitamin D analogue).

Toxicity: Toxicities included hypercalcemia (grade 1-3), and increased creatinine (grade 1-2).

Results: Median survival was 487 days (16 months).
