Patients: This phase I study involved 30 patients with various metastatic cancers. The patients were divided into three groups.

Group B had nine patients (5 men, 4 women) with advanced metastatic colon cancer. The median age was 63.

Treatment: Patients in Group B were treated with one chemotherapeutic agent: 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) In addition, hyaluronan (HA) was concurrently administered. Hyaluronan is a large, naturally occurring polysaccharide that can help target antitumor drugs to cancerous tissues in previous studies.

Toxicity: In Group B, 5-FU-only and 5-FU+HA treatments resulted in grade 1-4 pain. No grade 3-4 hematological toxicities were observed. Furthermore, 5-FU+HA treatment resulted in eliminating grade 1-2 thrombocytopenia.

Results: The authors conclude that co-administering HA does not alter the effectiveness of any anticancer drugs.
