Breast Cancer treatment details. Biologic therapy. San Filippo Neri Hospital, Rome, Italy

Survival: 4.0 months
Toxicity Grade: 3
Treatments: Biologic therapy
Drugs: Thalomid
Country: Italy
City/State/Province: Rome
Hospital: San Filippo Neri Hospital
Journal: Link
Date: 5/2005

Patients: This study involved 12 patients with metastatic breast cancer. The median age of the women was 53.5 years, and all had previously been treated with at least two chemotherapy regimens. All but one patient had at least two metastatic sites (7 had three or more sites), and 83% had liver metastasis.

Treatment: The treatment involved one chemotherapeutic drug: thalidomide.

Toxicity: The only grade 1-3 toxicity reported was constipation. Other toxicities (grades 1-2) that were reported were somnolence and asthenia.

Results: The median overall survival was 4 months. However, the authors do not report an objective response or disease stability to the treatment. Concurring with other studies showing similar results, the authors conclude: "thalidomide is an ineffective treatment in patients with progressive metastatic breast cancer heavily pretreated with chemotherapy."
