Patients: This Phase II study involved 63 women with metastatic breast cancer. Forty-eight patients had received prior chemotherapy; 39 patients had received no prior treatment for metastatic disease. The average age was 48.2 years.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of one chemotherapeutic agent: ABI-007. ABI-007 is the first biologically interactive albumin-bound form of paclitaxel, packaged as an injectable nanoparticle.

Toxicity: Two patients died during treatment. One patient died of a possibly treatment related cardiac ischemia/infarction. The other patient died of a massive aspiration into the lung (which the authors claim was unrelated to treatment). Grade 3-4 toxicities included neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia, leukopenia, fatigue, sensory neuropathy, myalgia, and diarrhea.

Results: The median overall survival was 14.7 months (63.6 weeks).

Support: American Bioscience financially supported this study, and many authors have received research funds, stock holdings, or honoraria from this company. American Bioscience develops, manufactures, and markets ABI-007.
