Description:
Patients: A total of 114 glioma patients were given this regimen: 78 had gliobalstoma multiforme, 24 had anaplastic astrocytomas, and 12 had oligodendrogliomas. The patients had not received prior treatment (excluding surgery).

Treatment: The treatment consisted of high-dose BCNU (a chemotherapy drug) followed by autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (from bone marrow harvest or apheresis) and radiotherapy.

Toxicity: Seven out of 114 patients died during the protocol (four “probably to treatment-related complications”). Grade 3 and Grade 4 toxicities included: nausea/vomiting, skin reactions, neurological aggravation, asthenia, thrombopenia, neutropenia, anemia, interstitial pneumonia, thrombo-embolisis, and radionecrosis.

Results: After median follow-up of 89 months, the overall survival for the glioblastoma multiforme patients was 12 months.
