Patients: This Phase I study involved 17 patients with advanced lung cancer (16 non-small-cell, 1 small-cell). The median age was 63, and eight of the patients were women. Thirteen had received prior chemotherapy, and nine had undergone previous radiotherapy.

Treatment: The treatment involved green tea extract (GTE). Previous studies suggested that GTE has therapeutic properties that protect against the development and growth of several cancers.

Toxicity: Grade 1-3 toxicities included diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and cardiovascular.

Results: There were no responses. The authors concluded: "GTE likely has limited activity as a cytotoxic agent, and further study of GTE as a single-agent in established malignancies may not be warranted. Further studies should focus on the potential chemopreventive and chemotherapy-enhancing properties of GTE."

Support: Ito En, Ltd., was involved with this study. Ito En manufactured the GTE used.
