Description:
Patients: This Phase I study involved a total of 29 patients with recurrent malignant gliomas. Nineteen patients had glioblastoma multiforme, 3 had gliosarcoma, 5 had anaplastic astrocytoma, and two had oligoastrocytoma.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of two chemotherapy drugs, temozolomide (temodar) and oral etoposide (VP-16, vepesid).

Toxicity: Two patients died from pneumonia. Other toxicities included fever, neutropenia, infection, nausea, vomiting, constipation, fatigue, pain, weight loss, headache, and seizure.

Results: Overall survival was not discussed.

Support: The study was supported in part by a grant from Schering-Plough, the manufacturer of temozolomide.
