Patients: This Phase II study involved 31 patients with advanced melanoma.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of a biological therapy - the Flk-1 tyrosine kinase inhibitor SU5416.

Toxicity: The study mentions a patient who died of a pulmonary embolus, and one who died after discharge from the hospital to treat dehydration. But, these deaths were not associated with the treatment by the authors. Grade 3-4 toxicities included: hematological, hyperglycemia, nausea, vomiting, elevated LFT's, infection, fatigue/weakness, and bleeding/thrombosis.

Results: The overal median survival was 6.7 months (29 weeks).
