Patients: This Phase I/II study involved 22 patients with recurrent high-grade gliomas. Fourteen patients had glioblastoma multiforme, four had anaplastic astrocytoma, two had anaplastic oligodendroglioma, one was gliosarcoma and another was categorized as high grade glioma. All patients had been treated with previous therapies.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of a drug to induce hypothyroidism (propylthiouracil) followed by tamoxifen (nolvadex).

Toxicity: One patient developed deep vein thrombosis.

Results: The median survival for the entire group was 4.3 months. (The patients who became hypothyroid had a median survival of 10.1 months.)
