Patients: A total of 70 patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma were in enrolled in this phase II trial. Patients were divided into two groups of 35 each. Group A was comprised of 29 men and 6 women with a median age of 60. Group B had 28 men and 7 women and the median age was 61.

Treatment: Patients in both groups received chemotherapy (cisplatin and doxorubicin). However the method of administration was different between the two groups. Group A underwent transient transarterial chemoocclusion. Patients in Group B underwent transarterial chemoperfusion.

Toxicity: For both groups, toxicities included grade 4 leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and nausea and vomiting.

Results: The overal median survival for Group A (transient transarterial chemoocclusion) was 60 weeks (13.8 months). The opveral median survival for Group A ( transarterial chemoperfusion) was 69 weeks (15.9 months).
