Patients: This Phase II study involved 46 patients (37 men, 9 women, median age 64 years) with advanced inoperable non-small-cell lung cancer.

Treatment: Treatment consisted of radiation therapy combined with one chemotherapeutic agent: gemcitabine. Surgery was also performed for a subset of patients.

Toxicity: Grade-3 toxicities included thrombocytopenia.

Results: The median overall survival was 13 months. Most patients responded and became eligible for surgical resection. The authors concluded, "induction therapy with gemcitabine and radiotherapy for
locally advanced NSCLC is feasible, safe, and effective."
