Patients: This Phase III trial involved a total of 433 patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. There were 295 men and 138 women. The median age was 63. Patients were divided into two groups. Group A comprised of 216 patients had Group B of 217 patients.

Treatment: The treatment for patients in Group A consisted of two chemotherapy drugs (docetaxel and carboplatin). The treatment for patients in Group B consisted of two chemotherapy regimens (mitomycin C and ifosfamide and cisplatin, or mitomycin C and vinblastine and cisplatin).

Toxicity: There were 69 early deaths (survival of less than 112 days) the majority attributable to cancer. There were six toxic deaths due to sepsis (several in both groups).

Results: The median overall survival for patients in Group A was 9.5 months. For Group B it was 8.7 months.
