Patients: This Phase II/III trial involved a total of 320 patients with progressive metastatic renal cell carcinoma. There were 222 men and 98 women. The ages ranged from 25 to 75. The median age was 60.

Treatment: Patients were divided into two groups. Group A (181 patients) received immunotherapy only (interferon alpha-2a). Group B (159 patients) received immunotherapy (interferon alpha-2a) and biological therapy (13-cis-Retinoic Acid).

Toxicity: For both groups, grade 4 toxicities included hematologic, lethargy, dermatologic, and pulmonary.

Results: The median overall survival for patients in Group A was 13.2 months, and 17.3 months for patients in Group B.
