Patients: This phase II study involved 23 patients with advanced metastatic renal cancer. Fourteen were men and 9 were women. The median age was 60 years, ranging from 40 to 70.

Treatment: All patients were given immunetherapy (interferon-alpha) and gene therapy (oblimersen - antisense to the gene for bcl-2, an anti-apoptotic protein.)

Toxicity: Grade 3/4 toxicities were fatigue, hypophosphatemia, hyperglycemia, lymphopenia, hyponatremia, and transaminase elevation.

Results: Of the 23 patients, only 1 experienced a partial response which lasted 2.5 months. All other patients progressed and the median overall survival was 2 months.
