Patients: This phase II trial involved 136 patients with stage IIIA and IIIB non-small cell lung cancer. The median age was 59.8 years, ranging from 31 to 77. Most (84.6%) patients were men.

Treatment: Patients were treated with the chemotherapy drugs cisplatin, gemcitabine and docetaxel. After receiving these drugs, they had surgery. Thoractomy surgery was performed in 90 patients. Of these, 83% were respectable and 17% were not. Of the patients that had respectable tumors, 68.9% had complete resections. Patients that were non-resectable or had incomplete resections were treated with radiation therapy had docetaxel.

Toxicity: Grade 3 or 4 neutropenia was reported in 62.5% of patients, 6% of which were febrile neutropenia. Other grade 3 and 4 toxicities were thrombocytopenia, anemia, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Results: The median overall survival for all patients was 15.9 months. For patients that were completely resected by the surgery, the median survival was 48.5 months. The median survival for the 13 incompletely resected patients was 12.9 months and 16.8 months for the 15 nonresected patients.
