Patients: This phase II study involved 65 patients with metastatic breast cancer. The median age was 52, ranging from 33 to 80 years old. The majority of women were premenopausal (65%).

Treatment: All patients received the chemotherapy drug Ixabepilone.

Toxicity: The majority of toxic effects were Grade 1 and 2. Grade 4 toxicities were vomiting (1 patient), neutropenia (20 patients), and leukopenia (5 patients).

Results: The median overall survival was 22 months, ranging from 15.6 to 27 months.

Support: Research funds were Bristol-Meyers Squibb, which developed Ixabepilone.
