Patients: This phase II study involved 32 patients with progressive, locally advanced, or metastatic renal cell carcinoma. The median age was 62 years, ranging from 46 to 76. The majority of patients (78%) were men.

Treatment: Patients were treated with the chemotherapy drugs cyclophosphamide and celecoxib. These drugs also have some effects on the immune system

Toxicity: One patient died from a gastrointestinal bleed. Grade 4 anemia was reported in one patient, and grade 3 hypokalemia (low potassium levels), elevated creatinine, and pain were reported.

Results: The median overall survival was 14.5 months. The median progression-free survival was 3.5 months.

Support: This study was supported by Pfizer, which markets celecoxib as Celebrex.
