Patients: This phase II study involved 48 men with advanced hormone-refractory prostate cancer. The median age was 67 years, ranging from 48-78. All had received prior hormone therapy, 54% underwent radiotherapy, and 33% had a prostatectomy.

Treatment: Patients were treated with a combination of chemotherapeutic and biological drugs: estramustine, celecoxib, and docetaxel.

Toxicity: One patient died from a gastric perforation possibly from the use of celecoxib. Grade 3 and 4 toxicities occurring in less than 10% of patients were anemia, neutropenia, diarrhea, stomatitis, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, dyspnea, edema, and onycholisis (finger or toenail abnormality). Grade 3/4 asthenia (weakness) was reported in 15% of patients

Results: The median overall survival was 19.2 months.
