Patients: This Phase I/II study involved 24 patients with recurrent or progressive malignant gliomas. Sixteen patients had glioblastoma multiforme, six patients had anaplastic astrocytoma, 1 patient had an anaplastic oligodendroglioma, and one patient had a mixed glioma. All patients had prior surgery and 18 patients had prior chemotherapy. All patients had prior radiotherapy.

Treatment: The treatment consisted of a new drug, CI-980 (a mitotic inhibitor).

Toxicity: Toxicities included grade 4 or less hematologic toxicity, hepatic/GI, hyperglycemia, stomatitis (grade 3), and neurologic toxicity .

Results: There were no responses and median survival for all patients was 38 weeks (8.8 months).
