Brain Cancer treatment details. Radiation. Surgery. Tohoku University School of Medicine , Sendai, Japan

Survival: 13.3 months
Toxicity Grade:
Treatments: Radiation
Country: Japan
City/State/Province: Sendai
Hospital: Tohoku University School of Medicine
Journal: Link
Date: 1/2002

Patients: A total of 32 patients were given this regimen. Twenty-one patients had glioblastoma multiforme and eleven patients had anaplastic astrocytoma. All patients were previously untreated (excluding surgery).

Treatment: Treatment consisted of intraoperative radiation therapy (IORT) followed by external radiation therapy.

Toxicity: Overall toxicity was not discussed, but there was possible brain necrosis. “There were no treatment-related deaths in the patients who received IORT…in four IORT patients…CT and MRI findings suggested brain necrosis. However, differential diagnosis of brain necrosis from tumor regrowth was difficult in these patients.”

Results: The median survival time for the glioblastoma patients was 13.3 months. The authors conclude that “IORT did not improve survival of malignant glioma patients compared to that of following conventional radiation therapy alone.”
