Patients: This phase II study involved 56 elderly patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer. They ranged in age from 70-84; the median age was 76 years. These patients had not been treated with chemotherapy before being in this study. The majority of patients (85.7%) had a history of smoking. About half of the patients had high blood pressure, and 12 patients had diabetes.

Treatment: Patients were treated with the chemotherapy drugs docetaxel and gemcitabine.

Toxicity: Grade 3 neutropenia was reported in 5.4% of patients, and thrombocytopenia was reported in 3.6% of patients. The main non-hematological toxicities were mucositis (grade 3 and 4), diarrhea (grade 3), and grade 3 asthenia. Each of these was reported in less than 10% of patients.

Results: The median overall survival was 8.0 months. Many patients had other medical conditions and the survival time was different in these patients; patients with one or no other conditions had a median overall survival of 8.6 months, and for those with more than one other medical condition, it was 5.4 months.
