Patients: This phase II study involved 20 men with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer). The median age was 66, ranging from 37 to 81 years of age.

Treatment: Patients were treated with the chemotherapy drug epirubicin, which was mixed with Lipiodol and delivered through a catheter inserted into an artery in the leg.

Toxicity: Grade 4 neutropenia and grade 3 thrombocytopenia and leukocytopenia were reported. Grade 1 and 2 toxicities included nausea, fever, alopecia, and elevated enzyme levels.

Results: The median overall survival was 12.4 months. The authors concluded that this treatment was not very effective for these patients.
